The Blues sign off their U21 campaign with a defeat at Playford Road
A strong performance from Town ‘keeper, Michael Crowe couldn’t prevent a 2-0 U21 loss at the hands of Millwall in the final game of the season at Playford Road this afternoon.
The Welsh U21 international, who spent time on loan at Braintree earlier in the season, made a number of strong stops to keep the Blues in the game, but ultimately, the Lions were too strong on the day.
Teddy Bishop played the first-half in a bid to improve his match fitness while Ainsley Maitland-Niles managed just over an hour.
The visitors, who had former Town skipper, Carlos Edwards in defence, took little under three minutes to take the lead with Kyron Farrell’s effort from 25-yards deflected off Joe Robinson, wrong-footing Crowe, before trickling into the net.
Despite the early goal, neither side managed to control the game in the first 45 minutes, but Millwall soon showed glimpses of doing so early in the second as Crowe superbly clawed away a close-range Jamie Philpot header soon after the restart.
Ben Morris replaced the injured Shane McLoughlin and soon created Town’s best opportunity of the game as he broke away down the right before cutting the ball back for fellow substitute Conor McKendry who teed up Monty Patterson, but David Forde was on hand to parry his powerful effort behind for a corner.
That was as close as the hosts came to grabbing a goal and Millwall would double their advantage soon after with Joseph Otudeko blasting the ball into the corner from the edge of the box despite the best efforts of Crowe.
Town’s stopper still had work to do as he twice saved efforts from substitute, Noel Leighton in the closing moments, but the result was sealed and the Lions took all three points.
Town: Crowe, Emmanuel, Kenlock, Smith, Robinson, Maitland-Niles (Downes, 64), McDonnell, Bishop (McKendry, 45), Blanchfield, McLoughlin (Morris, 52). Subs not used: Marsden, Fowler.
