Mick delighted to have Reg back and confident of adding to squad before window closes
With Brett Pitman sidelined with a thigh injury and David McGoldrick ruled out for two months with ankle ligament damage, Town were down to two fit strikers for the visit to Brentford at the weekend but the boss has moved quickly to add the 33-year-old to his options.
Varns has signed a short-term deal until January, his third spell at Portman Road and Mick told the Club website: “It’s great to have Reg back.
“He was a free agent at the end of last season so he could do what he wanted but I had reservations about not sorting something out then.
“He’s a good player and has been a good servant to us. He’s a great personality. We all love him, the staff, the players.
“With Didz injured, we had to try and get someone in before the weekend. That was never going to be easy but I knew Reg would be fit and could do a job for us.
“There were clubs interested in him but I rang him yesterday and it was all sorted in no time.
“We are still looking to add to the squad further before the window closes. I’ve had discussions with some Premier League clubs and they are saying ‘we are trying to get someone in. This might happen, that might happen - if it does, we might be able to do something’.
“So it’s a case of being patient at the moment but I’m confident that we will add to the squad before the end of August.”
