Striker misses Bristol return but will play for U23s on Monday after 10 weeks out

Brett Pitman is closing in on a return to action but won’t be in the squad for Saturday’s trip to Bristol City.

The striker, who spent three years at Ashton Gate, will step up his recovery from ankle ligament damage with a run-out for the U23s against Huddersfield at Portman Road on Monday night.

“Brett has trained really well but I will be the last person to throw someone in after 10 weeks out and expect him to perform,” Town boss Mick McCarthy told Ipswich Player HD.

“He will be training here over the weekend and will play for the U23s on Monday, along with some of the others who might not play at Bristol.

“There is nothing wrong with his ankle and his fitness but match fitness is a completely different thing. He’s not had a game for over 10 weeks.”

Brett has been out since sustaining the injury at Leeds in September.

Mick added that he will be sticking with the same starting line-up for the game at Bristol that kicked off the 3-0 win against QPR last weekend.
