Blues defeated at Portman Road as Brett Pitman makes his return from injury
Goals at the end of each half ensured an experienced Town side fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Huddersfield in the Premier League Cup.
Kevin Bru, Jonny Williams, Leon Best, Dean Gerken, and Brett Pitman all started the game, but couldn’t help the Blues to victory at Portman Road.
Adam McDonnell came closest for Town in the opening 45 minutes with a free-kick that went comfortably wide as Gerard Nash’s side failed to create any clear cut opportunities.
For the visitors, Jack Boyle had an effort from just outside the box that Gerken held at the second attempt, while Jordan Williams fired wide from 30 yards out after robbing Williams of the ball in midfield.
With the half drawing to a close, the Terriers took the lead. A short corner made its way out to Boyle who blasted into the top corner with a thunderous strike from 25 yards, clipping the bar on the way in.
The Blues started the second period more energetically than the first had ended, and Kevin Bru tried his luck from distance, but his effort was just over the top.
Gerken was called into action as Huddersfield substitute Denilson Carvalho found himself through on goal, but the ‘keeper stood firm to deny the Terrier from doubling the lead.
Town struggled to break down a resilient visiting defence, and were often restricted to having efforts from outside the box, with Williams twice going close; the second well turned over the bar by George Dorrington after taking a deflection on the way through.
It was as close as Town came, and the game was wrapped up with a minute to play as Lewis O’Brien thundered the ball home from a difficult angle past the helpless Gerken to seal all three points for the visitors.
