Town fall to second successive U21 defeat despite a first-half goal from Kyle Hammond

A goal from Kyle Hammond wasn’t enough to help Town’s U21 side to a result against Crystal Palace yesterday afternoon.

Hammond’s goal was sandwiched between strikes from Randell Williams and Corie Andrews as the Eagles claimed victory at their Beckenham training ground.

The game saw the return of Andre Dozzell to the side, with the youngster playing his first 21s game since coming back from captaining the England U17s in the Algarve Tournament earlier this month.

With Town falling behind early in the game through Williams, Dozzell was to play a part in the equaliser as he squared the ball to Hammond on the edge of the Palace box for him to drill the ball into the net, despite the best efforts of the hosts defenders.

The goal sent the sides into the break level, but Gary Issott’s took control early in the second, with Sullay Kaikai looking threatening.

He had a trio of chances to score, although the closest he came was with a cross which evaded everybody before striking the crossbar.

They did retake the lead with an hour played, however, as Andrews dispossessed Chris Smith in the Town defence before slotting the ball past Jacob Marsden from close range.

Hammond did his upmost to salvage a point for the Blues, but he seen his late effort fall just wide of the target, as Andrews’ strike was enough for Palace to take all three points.

Town: Marsden, Emmanuel, Fowler, Smith, Webber, Hammond, Dozzell, McDonnell, McKendry (Morris, 62), McLoughlin, Blanchfield (Guldbrandsen, 62). Subs not used: Wright, Woolfenden.
