Robinson sees red late on as the U's claim all three points at Florence Park

A late Femi Akinwande penalty was enough Colchester to victory over Town’s U21s at Florence Park this afternoon.

Town’s line-up included first-team players Larsen Toure, Luke Varney, Paul Digby and Jay Tabb, as well as Josh Emmanuel and Myles Kenlock, who have both had a small taste of action in the senior side this season.

Digby himself almost got Town off to the perfect start, forcing the 'keeper into a fine early save after just two minutes follow a neat low cross from Adam McDonnell.

It was Varney who came closest to breaking the deadlock though in a goalless opening first-half as he struck the post with a left-footed effort midway through the opening period following some good work from Shane McLoughlin.

Conor McKendry and Toure also had efforts on goal, but neither could find the target or trouble Dillon Barnes in the Colchester goal.

The home side dominated the second-half, and it took three fine saves from Jonathan Henly to keep the scoreline level.

The game looked to be heading for a stalemate until the final stages of the game as a Joe Robinson challenge on Akinwade in the box resulted in a penalty and a red card for Town’s captain, which was duly dispatched by the U’s striker, gifting the hosts all three points.

Town: Henly, Emmanuel, Digby, Robinson, Kenlock, Tabb, McDonnell, McLoughlin, Toure, Varney, McKendry. Subs: Marsden, Smith, Hammond, Guldbrandsen, Blanchfield.
