Young Blues suffer disappointing defeat to Essex neighbours at Playford Road

Town’s U21 Development Squad were defeated 3-0 by Colchester at Playford Road this afternoon.

The young Blues, the majority who helped the U18’s to a 3-1 win over Millwall at the weekend, were comfortably beaten by a strong display from our Essex neighbours.

With the first-team facing Portsmouth in an FA Cup replay tomorrow, Mark Kennedy’s side were denied the availability of a number of regulars, although Alex Henshall and James Alabi both started.

The visitors made a bright start and after a couple of early chances finally broke the deadlock after 11 minutes, with Charley Edge sweeping home following a neat pull-back from Tosin Olufemi.

The U’s doubled their lead soon after, with Femi Akinwande slotting past Town ‘keeper Jon Henly and into the bottom corner with a tidy finish.

Town did create a couple of good openings but Alabi could only fire over following a Andre Dozzell through-ball, before Conor McKendry saw his effort comfortably saved by the ‘keeper.

However Colchester sealed the win with around ten minutes left to play, with Drey Wright’s corner being headed home at the back-post by the unmarked Jamie Harney to cap off a frustrating afternoon for the young Blues.

Town: Henly, Jones, Salaudeen, Smith, Woolfenden, Blanchfield, McKendry, Henshall (Meldrum 60), Dozzell, Morris, Alabi (Cathline 71). Subs not used: Marsden, Ramadan.
