REPORT: CAMBRIDGE 1 TOWN 1

23 July 2016

Draw at the Abbey as Pigott's late goal cancels out Dozzell strike

A goal from Andre Dozzell wasn’t enough to give Town as a final minute Joe Pigott strike ensured Cambridge would take a draw from the Abbey.

After a slow start Town begun to grow into the game and could have had the lead with less than a quarter of an hour on the clock.

Shane McLoughlin prodded the ball into an empty net after a Murphy header had been parried by U’s ‘keeper, Will Norris, although the Irishman had drifted into an offside position and his effort was ruled out for offside.

Luke Hyam had to be withdrawn just after the half hour mark after landing awkwardly in a challenge with Luke Berry with 16-year old Tristan Nydam coming on to replace him.

The hosts, and George Maris in particular, perhaps created the better chances in the opening 45 as he first fired straight at Bialkowski, then put a powerful strike just wide of the target, before missing a glorious opportunity to give his side the lead.

Maris rounded the Town ‘keeper after being slipped through on goal by team-mate Max Clark, but from a narrow angle, his shot clipped the outside of the post and went behind for a goal-kick.

David McGoldrick, along with Freddie Sears, was brought on just after the hour mark to make his first appearance of the season before Mick McCarthy made a further eight changes with 20 to play, ensuring each player would get a run out, as he did in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over Colchester.

The Ireland international looked composed as ever and created a golden opportunity for the Blues to open the scoring as he played Sears through with a defence-splitting pass, but his fellow striker had his shot saved by Norris.

The goal did come with less than ten minutes to play as Dozzell controlled a Sears cross from the right before spinning the defender and slotting the ball into the bottom corner.

However, the lead was to be short-lived as Piggot ensured the U’s would gain a draw with just a minute to play as he picked up Ben Williamson’s through ball before firing home.
