Pitman and Sears on the scoresheet as Town secure victory over Shels
Goals from Brett Pitman and Freddie Sears ensured Town would kick-off the pre-season schedule with a win over Shelbourne at Tolka Park.
The hosts would get on the scoresheet from the penalty spot, though, Mick McCarthy fielded different XI’s in each half, including a number of youngsters.
Town looked strong early on, with Teddy Bishop looking the most likely to open the scoring, and he almost did just that as he and Shane McLoughlin linked up with a one-two, but the midfielder’s effort was deflected behind for a corner.
The Blues would take the lead midway through the half, and Bishop would be involved as he fed Pitman who blasted into the top corner from 25 yards out with a thunderous strike.
It was a goal that would carry Town into the break with the lead, and it was a lead that would be doubled by Sears after the break.
Ben Morris slid the ball into the former West Ham striker and he squeezed the ball in at Shels ‘keeper, Greg Murray’s near post.
Sears looked to double his tally soon after having been put through on goal by Cameron Stewart, but this time Murray was equal to the effort and turned it behind for a corner.
Town continued to push, and Stewart had an effort himself which whistled just over the bar, but the hosts would pull one back as Dylan Grimes sent Bialkowski the wrong way from the spot after Tommy Smith had handled in the box.
That’s how it would finish as the Blues would leave Tolka Park with the victory.
