McDonnell and Dozzell on target as Town beat the Baggies

Town’s U23s got off the mark in the Premier League Cup with a win over West Bromwich Albion at Portman Road.

Adam McDonnell and Andre Dozzell were on the scoresheet, but despite the Baggies reducing the arrears just before the break, Gerard Nash’s side held on for the victory.

minute for the opener.thIt was a bright start from the home side, with Ben Morris and Shane McLoughlin coming close, but the Blues had to wait until the 20

A fantastic move was finished off by McDonnell as he collected a Morris pass before slotting home from an acute angle, through the legs of Baggies ‘keeper, Alex Palmer.

Town didn’t have to wait long to double the lead, and it was another brilliant move. James Blanchfield and Dozzell linked up with a one-two on the edge of the box which put the latter in on goal, and he expertly dinked over Palmer to cap off what was a superb first-half display from the midfielder.

The lead would be cut just before the break as Callum Pritchett slipped in Bradley Sweeney who squared the ball into the unmarked Chay Scrivens, who had the simple task of finishing the move, stroking the ball into the net from 12 yards.

Blues ‘keeper, Harry Wright had to be alert to push a Joe Ward free-kick onto the bar, and minutes later Morris had the perfect opportunity to restore Town’s two-goal advantage.

Kundai Benyu linked-up with Luke Woolfenden and fired the ball across the face off goal, but Morris couldn’t get a clean connection on the shot from six yards out and the Baggies cleared.

West Brom thought they had grabbed an equaliser with the seconds to go as Ward’s strike from distance deflected off a defender, but it was excellently clawed onto the woodwork again by Wright, ensuring the points would be staying at Portman Road.
