David McGoldrick and Shane McLoughlin on target at Blues are held in Essex
David McGoldrick made a goalscoring return to action as Town’s U23s were held to a draw against Colchester United.
The striker has been out since injuring his ankle in August and managed 70 minutes at the Weston Homes Community Stadium under the watchful eye of Mick McCarthy.
It didn’t take long for the returning frontman to make an impact as he peeled off his marker to nod home a James Blanchfield cross with less than two minutes on the clock.
The visitors pressed for an equaliser and had the ideal opportunity to do so from the spot after Luke Woolfenden fouled George Brown in the box. Femi Akinwande seen his initial spot-kick saved by Crowe, but the striker bundled home the rebound, colliding with Crowe in the process, resulting in the Town stopper picking up an ankle knock and having to be replaced by Harry Wright.
It didn’t take the young ‘keeper to be called upon, and he had to pull off an outstanding save to prevent Lloyd Doyley’s glancing header from hitting the back of the net.
It proved to be an important save as Town would take a lead into half-time. McGoldrick again played a big role as his powerful strike from distance hit the foot of the post and rebounded into the path of McLoughlin, who bravely headed the loose ball into the net.
The hosts hit back again on the hour mark, although there was a hint of fortune about it, as Dion Sembie-Ferris’ cross looped over Wright and into the top corner.
Ben Morris came close to winning it for the Blues with ten minutes to play as he cut in off the right before firing towards the top corner, but U’s ‘keeper, Dillon Barnes superbly clawed it over the bar.
Level was how it remained, though, as Gerard Nash’s side picked up their first point on the road this season.
