Goals from Morris (2), Best and Emmanuel give Town a comfortable win at Portman Road
Town’s U23s recorded their second league victory of the season with a comfortable win over Leeds United, as Ben Morris (2), Leon Best and Josh Emmanuel all got on the scoresheet.
Best started alongside Luke Varney, Andre Dozzell and Dean Gerken as a strong Town side lined up at Portman Road.
In a very quiet opening 45 minutes, James Blanchfield went into the book midway through the half with a late challenge on Billy Whitehouse, and Varney had to be withdrawn due to an injury soon after, but his replacement quickly gave the Blues the advantage.
Morris raced onto a through ball from Best before coolly slotting the ball past Bailey Peacock-Farrell in the Leeds goal.
The visitors threatened to level immediately through Ewan Mulhern after the ball had fallen favourably to the Whites’ striker, but his side-footed effort flew just wide and Town had the lead at the break.
The second period begun in a very similar way to the first, with very little being created at either end. Blanchfield tested Peacock-Farrell with a shot from the edge of the box which was held low down and Leeds’ Tom Pearce had an audacious 30-yard shot go comfortably wide, but the floodgates would soon open for the Blues.
Firstly, Best robbed Jack Vann in the Leeds defence which allowed him the opportunity to bear down on goal unchallenged, and he duly accepted the opportunity to stick the ball in the net. The former Rotherham man had his initial shot saved, but he stabbed the rebound into an empty net.
Josh Emmanuel bagged the third just two minutes later to put the hosts on easy street as his shot from the edge of the box took a deflection and nestled in the far corner.
It was to get worse for visitors with five minutes left on the clock as Morris notched his second of the game, outmuscling the defender to get on the end of a Monty Patterson flick-on and fire past the ‘keeper.
4-0 was how it would finish as Gerard Nash’s side picked up all three points at Portman Road.
