Gerard Nash's side beaten at Oakwell despite late Dozzell goal

A late goal from Andre Dozzell turned out to be nothing more than a consolation strike as Town’s U23s lost 3-1 to Barnsley at Oakwell this afternoon.

With the Blues taking on Reading this afternoon, no first-team players travelled to South Yorkshire and a young side lined up.

The Tykes held a 2-0 half-time lead thanks to goals from Omari Patrick and Jake Charles, but the Blues did have chances in the opening 45 as Ben Morris had a header well saved and James Blanchfield fired an effort wide.

Giles Coke, making his return after knee surgery, had a shot early in the second period which was flashed just wide and Adam McDonnell was thwarted by Barnsley ‘keeper Jack Walton, but the hosts would extend their lead with just over five minutes to play through Jacob Brown.

Dozzell reduced the arrears in the closing stages with a good finish, but that was to be as good as it got for Town as Barnsley claimed all three points.

Town: Crowe, McQueen, Smith, Fowler, Webber, Blanchfield, Coke, McDonnell, Dozzell, McLoughlin, Morris.
