Varney bags the winner but was delighted with solid defensive performance
Luke Varney has praised Town’s dogged defensive display as the Blues got back to winning ways with a 1-0 win over Derby at the iPro Stadium.
The forward came off the bench at half-time to net the winner against Nigel Pearson’s side and admits he was impressed with the determination to keep a clean sheet.
“If you’re going to take a result then 1-0 is perfect,” he told Ipswich Player HD.
“Obviously they had a few chances at the end but the lads were throwing themselves in so it was a fantastic performance and it will make the journey home a lot easier.
“I don’t know how many blocks there were but it must have been in double figures. Webs [Adam Webster] reminded me of a young Beckenbauer coming out from the back! I know his qualities and he’s stepped up, but all the lads are rooting for each other no matter who plays or who comes off.
“I’ve been working hard in training and when I got the ball to my feet I could hear TC shouting at me to keep it down so I was delighted to get a good connection on it and see it roll in.
“We did the hard side of the game well and luckily we got the goal so we can move on now and look forward to another big game on Saturday.”
