No argument with result for boss as Play-Off reward gave Owls added incentive

Mick McCarthy felt that the reward Sheffield Wednesday were playing for gave them the extra edge in the win over Town.

The Owls booked their place in the Play-Offs thanks to Kieran Lee’s goal 13 minutes from time in Blues’ last home game of the campaign.

“They were better than us in the end, certainly in the second-half and it was a moment of quality for the goal,” the Town boss told Ipswich Player HD.

“They looked like a team with something to play for. They had that extra edge to them and I think that was the main difference.

“We obviously wanted to win but we never got near the level we showed against Newcastle. That was a big game for us and there was that extra edge for us that day. Whatever percentage it is, that makes a difference when one side has that big reward to play for.

“They are a good side as well. They had won five on the bounce before today and you only have to look at the quality they had on the bench to see what squad they have got.”

Mick paid tribute to Tom Lawrence, who made his last appearance at Portman Road on loan from Leicester.

“He’s been great for us and deserved the ovation he got when he came off,” added the boss.

“He’s been carrying an ankle problem and then got another knock and the last thing I wanted to do is see him getting injured.”
