Praise for matchwinner Joe as Town wait on Andre update
Mick McCarthy said it was a perfect start in terms of a result and performance but the day was marred by the injury to Andre Dozzell.
The midfielder was stretchered off just before half-time with the boss fearing it’s a cruciate ligament injury.
“The worry is that it’s a cruciate but that will be confirmed one way or another when he sees the specialist on Monday,” Mick told iFollow after the 1-0 win over Birmingham.
“In terms of result and performance it was the perfect day but obviously Dozzer’s injury has put a cloud over it.
“Joe Garner took his goal well. His movement was brilliant for the goal. It was a good move from us.
“He has been terrific for us. He was a right handful. You’d hate to play against him ever week. He is a real problem for defenders and that is a great thing to say about a centre-forward.
“It was a great response from the players and it was vital for us, that result. Vital for me as well personally that we have played well and won.
“I’ve had lovely support but perhaps there was an element waiting to have a go just in case we got beat. I’m not blaming them because we were rubbish last year.
“My ambition is to create a team again that wins games, plays good football and excites the fans and we’ve done that today.”
Mick added that he is hopeful of adding to his squad with another striker "fairly soon".
