Frustration for Blues as EFL insist Rams have to play in Carabao Cup
Town’s match against Derby scheduled for Tuesday, September 12 has been postponed.
The Rams now have to play a Carabao Cup tie against Barnsley on that date.
Derby’s Carabao Cup first round tie against Grimsby at the start of August was abandoned after 19 minutes because of a waterlogged pitch.
The game was rescheduled for August 22, the week of the second round games with Gary Rowett’s side winning 1-0.
Derby were then due to play their second round tie against the Tykes on September 19, the date of the third round games in the competition but the EFL have brought that match forward a week in order to make sure the winners can play Tottenham in the scheduled week for third round matches.
Spurs have Champions League games on September 13 and September 26 so must play their Carabao Cup tie against Derby or Barnsley the week in between.
A rearranged date for the trip to the iPro Stadium will be announced in due course.
An EFL spokesperson said “The EFL would like to apologise to the clubs involved and importantly the supporters of those teams for any inconvenience caused.”
Town MD, Ian Milne, told the Club website: “It’s very frustrating for all concerned, especially our supporters given the short notice but we have no influence on the decision at all. It’s completely out of our hands.”
