U23 REPORT | TOWN 3 SHEFFIELD UTD 2

29 August 2017

Town see off the Blades at Portman Road

Tom Adeyemi made his first appearance in a Town shirt as the U23s ran out 3-2 winners over Sheffield United at Portman Road.

The midfielder whose start to life with the Blues has been blighted by illness and injury played just over an hour alongside Luke Hyam in the heart of midfield.

Hyam was his usual tenacious self, but it was the winger to his right, Danny Rowe, that created the majority of Town's attacking play.

Rowe threatened within a minute as he cut in off the left, only to see his shot held by the Blades' keeper.

He was to play an important role in the opening goal, with his deep corner being nodded in at the back post by Luke Woolfenden.

The Blues extended their lead just before the break and it was Rowe that got his own name on the scoresheet, but it was the combination of Ben Folami and Ben Morris that created the opportunity, skipping past the goalkeeper before squaring to Rowe who nonchalantly backheeled the ball into an empty net.

The visitors reduced the arrears early in the second-half with Keenan Ferguson meeting a Jordan Hallam corner to power a header past Michael Crowe, despite the Wales U21 international's best efforts.

But Rowe was on hand to restore Town's two-goal cushion with Folami latching on to his reverse pass to force the ball past Marcus Dewhurst from close range.

It was to be short lived, though, with Hallam scoring two minutes later for United, applying the finishing touch after a goalmouth scramble to bring the score to 3-2.

Hallam almost salvaged a point for the visitors with little over five minutes to go, but his shot struck the underside of the bar, and the rebound was blazed wide from close range.

Defeat was perhaps harsh on the Blades who should've scored with a minute to go, but another goalmouth scramble this time fell in Town's favour, with the final effort blasted wide.

Celina had the chance to seal the result from the penalty spot in stoppage time, but he fired it over the crossbar. Luckily for Gerard Nash's side, it wasn't crucial as the Blues held on for victory.

Town: Crowe, Woolfenden, Fowler, C. Smith, Webber, Rowe, Hyam (Blanchfield, 72), Adeyemi (McDonnell, 61), Celina, Morris, Folami (McLoughlin, 79). Not Used: Wright, Clements.
