Praise for McGoldrick and midfield duo as Town end Villa's unbeaten home record

Mick McCarthy hailed the influence of David McGoldrick on his team as Town became the first club to win at Villa Park this season.

The Republic of Ireland international showed touch and awareness to set up Emyr Huws’ first goal for the Club eight minutes from time to give Blues the three points.

“I said to Didz ‘you won us the game’. Okay, Emyr has done that by putting the ball in the net but Didz had a great part to play in it.

“He kept calm when he could have shot from the angle but is clever enough to pick out a pass like he did.

“He’s fit and right back at it now and he makes a big difference to us. I thought him and Tom Lawrence were excellent for us up front.”

Mick also paid tribute to the matchwinner and his midfield partner, adding: “We have missed that from the centre of the park, a player driving forward and scoring goals.

“Emyr had added something to the team and so has Toums [Toumani Diagouraga]. They’ve made a big difference. They have been outstanding in the two games [Reading and Villa].”

Town’s injury woes continued with Steven Taylor and Christophe Berra forced off before half-time.

“Tayls has got a hamstring and Bez took a knock in his face. It takes something for him to come off.

“I thought it was a penalty. He was on the end of the cross and was going to head it when an arm came across and he got smashed.

“Isn’t it great though when the players that came on, Jordan Spence and Myles [Kenlock] defend like they did. Jonas moved inside and did great as well. He can play left sided of a back three.”

Mick also revealed that Dominic Samuel has been added to the injury list. The loanee from Reading has broken his toe and is expected to be out for six weeks.
