Mick takes heart from display against Royals and praises impact of newboys

Mick McCarthy says he would take performances like he got against Reading even if they ended in defeat.

Tom Lawrence took his goal tally to 10 for the season with a brace in the 2-2 draw against the promotion chasing Royals in a thrilling game at Portman Road.

“We had to react after the Derby game in midweek and I was delighted with the response we got,” the Town boss told Ipswich Player HD.

“The changes helped. It freshened it up and I thought all the lads that came in were excellent. We had to be at full pelt against a very good Reading team and I think we did enough to have got the three points but that’s the way it’s going for us at the moment. It was a fantastic strike from 30 yards for their second goal but it went through bodies and ended up in the bottom corner.

“It gives me heart though, performances like that. The crowd were great and they gave us great support. They want to see performances like that from us and they’ve seen that today and a really good game.

“I don’t want to lose, obviously, but I would take that if it came after a performance like that because there are so many positives. We had a real go.”

Mick had further praise for Tom, who made it eight goals in eight games and says the Wales international will be playing in the Premier League.

“There was interest in Tom in the window but he loves it here and is enjoying his football,” added the boss.

“The fans were singing ‘sign him up’. That would be lovely but he wants to play in the Premier League and he’ll do that. I told him he won’t be short of offers.”

Blues will know more about Cole Skuse’s fitness on Monday. The midfielder limped off with an achilles injury in the first-half.
