Colin Stuart rewarded for his work with Samaritans of Ipswich and East Suffolk

Samaritans of Ipswich and East Suffolk have proudly been supporting the local community for more than 50 years.

In 2015 alone, the branch were contacted by more than 17,500 people asking for help from the charity’s volunteers, with figures set to have risen last year.

One of those volunteers was Colin Stuart, who has worked with the charity for the past 16 years.

Colin became involved with the Samaritans of Ipswich and East Suffolk after hearing a powerful radio appeal for volunteers. He contacted the charity, undertook training and became a Samaritan Listening Volunteer, offering support to those who felt they had no one else to turn to, whether their problems were based upon finances, relationships, identity, loss or any other circumstance.

Colin has been dedicated to helping others through volunteering with the Samaritans of Ipswich and East Suffolk and has taken on many responsibilities during his 16 years at the charity. These have included; managing volunteer recruitment, branch committee member, chair of Trustees, deputy Director of Training and he took on the role of Branch Director between 2011 and 2013.

Colin is a remarkable individual, giving up his time to help others whilst still working to support his own family. He currently owns a newsagents in Leiston, where he has lived for the past 37 years, continuing his work with Samaritans of Ipswich and East Suffolk. He has now taken on the role of Regional Marketing Officer focusing much of his time on the charity’s retail shops and ways to improve them, following the work he undertook to set up their shop in Ipswich Town Centre.

We are delighted to have Colin with us today, who has nominated 10-year-old, Leo Welham, a Town season ticket holder, to lead the teams out on his behalf.

If you know someone who deserves some recognition for doing something special, going above and beyond, shown a huge amount of bravery or given up their time for a local charity, or maybe they’ve shown kindness towards others or deserve a bit of recognition for overcoming adversity, then email your nomination to jade.cole@itfc.co.uk.
