Boss happy with impact of kids and goalscorer after win at Colchester

Mick McCarthy had praise for his youngsters and matchwinner Joe Garner after seeing Town edge out Colchester in the penultimate friendly of pre-season.

Garner’s header early in the second-half gave Blues a 1-0 win in front of 2000 travelling Town fans at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

“Someone said Joe can’t head a ball, well that was a fantastic header,” the Town boss told iFollow.

“His ability in the air and his willingness to compete against bigger defenders is one of his most adhering qualities.

“He has played well in the games and he’s scored goals as well. Being a striker, he probably doesn’t worry too much about how he plays as long as he scores but he has done both.

“It was a good run out tonight. It always is here. That local rivalry makes it a bit more spicy without any silly tackles. It was a competitive game and I thought we played well. We certainly deserved to win.

“The youngsters did well again. Conor McKendry did well, Tristan Nydam was terrific. Adam McDonnell, who has been around longer, had a good first-half. Flynn Downes has been a stand out player for us and it was Ben Morris’ best game when he has been involved with the first-team. From the first minute when he made a block, he showed more aggression and competitiveness. I was pleased with all of them.”
