Boss impressed with 5-0 win over Drogheda United

Mick McCarthy was happy to kick-off pre-season with a victory, and was impressed with the performances of some of his young players.

Goals from Brett Pitman, Freddie Sears (2), Kieffer Moore and Joe Garner did the damage as the Blues ran out 5-0 winners over Drogheda United at United Park.

“It’s always nice to win the games and I thought we played well,” the boss said after the game.

“We created some good chances and scores some good goals, so hopefully there’s no injuries.

“I’m sure Joe Garner will be delighted to get his first goal too.

“I was really impressed with Flynn Downes, and Tristan Nydam playing at left-back was great, so it was really nice to see them involved.”

Skipper, Luke Chambers missed the game, as did new signings Tom Adeyemi and Bersant Celina, but Mick isn’t worried about their fitness going forward.

“Chambo had his tonsils out and he’s been a bit out of sorts,” he added.

“He hasn’t done any training yet, but he’s okay.

“Tom and Bersant haven’t trained enough to play, and Bersant has been a bit poorly which is why they weren’t involved.”
