REPORT | PETERBOROUGH 1 TOWN 3

18 July 2017

Joe Garner continues pre-season scoring streak as Town win at the ABAX

A double from Joe Garner and a strike from David McGoldrick ensured Town would come from a goal behind to defeat Peterborough United this evening.

In a pre-season game with a 'twist', both sides played two halves of 60 minutes, with both managers changing their entire line-up at the break.

Those halves were then split into two 30 minute periods with a five minute break in-between.

It was Posh that struck first with ex-Blue, Jack Marriott prodding home from close range after getting on the end of Gwion Edwards' cross.

Town weren't behind for long and it was McGoldrick who levelled the score as he confidently found the net after a Garner shot had been blocked.

The former Rangers striker was to get on the scoresheet twice himself after a five minute interval following the first 30 minute period as he first nodded home a Danny Rowe corner before linking up with Celina excellently to finish from close range, making it five goals in three pre-season games.

The second half of 60 minutes begun, as expected, with 11 changes from each manager as Blues newest recruit, Dominic Iorfa given his first appearance in a Town shirt.

It was a half that passed largely without incident, but Town did come close as Cole Skuse threaded the ball through to Grant Ward whose one-on-one was well saved by Posh's substitute 'keeper, Josh Tibbetts.

Freddie Sears also had three chances to add to the Blues' lead as the end of the game came closer, but couldn't add to his tally of three pre-season goals so far, as Mick McCarthy's side came out comfortable winners.

First-Half XI: Gerken, Spence, Chambers, Knudsen, Nydam, Rowe, Downes, Bru, Celina, Garner, McGoldrick.

Second-Half XI: Crowe, Iorfa (Fowler, 101), C. Smith, T. Smith, Kenlock, Ward (Patterson, 113), Bishop, Skuse, McKendry, Sears, Morris (McLoughlin, 101).
