We need that pressure over places says returning Blue

Tommy Smith has welcomed the competition for places in the Town line up after making his first start for Blues since August against Cardiff on Tuesday.

The New Zealand international had been sidelined with a hamstring injury but his return and that of Adam Webster, who is also available now after two months out with an ankle problem, has given Mick McCarthy some options at the back now.

“There are more of us coming back now and that means there is some good competition for places” the 27-year-old told iFollow Ipswich.

“Without that pressure you can start to get complacent. You need to know there are others challenging for your position. It keeps you on your toes and makes you more determined to perform at the top level.

“It would be nice to have everyone fit at some point this season. If all the guys are fit then I think we have a really strong squad on paper.”
