Smith in fitness race for World Cup decider

Tommy Smith is an injury concern for New Zealand ahead of the second-leg of their World Cup Play-Off against Peru.

The Town defender was forced off with a calf problem just past the hour of the goalless draw in the first-leg in Wellington.

Tommy, who was making his 36th appearance for the All Whites, will be hoping to recover in time for the second-leg on Thursday. Fellow Blue, Monty Patterson, was an unused substitute for New Zealand.

"I have spoken to Tommy and New Zealand will obviously be assessing his progress. If he has no chance of playing he will return to us," Town physio Matt Byard told the Club website.

Also remaining on the bench was Jonas Knudsen, who was among the Denmark substitutes against the Republic of Ireland in the goalless draw in their 2018 World Cup Play-Off in Copenhagen.

Flynn Downes was in action though, the Town midfielder playing the full game for England U19s in their 2-1 win over Iceland in a European Championship qualifier.

The Young Lions finish their qualifying group against hosts Bulgaria on Tuesday.
