U23 REPORT | TOWN 2 VILLA 1

6 November 2017

A late winner gives Town all three points in the Premier League Cup

Luke Woolfenden grabbed a late winner as Town's U23s saw off Aston Villa 2-1 at Portman Road this evening.

The defender was on hand to slam home a loose ball to hand the Blues a deserved three points after being thwarted on numerous occasions by the visiting 'keeper.

Gerard Nash's side did take the lead early on as Conor McKendry poked the ball home at the back post having got on the end of a flick-on from Emyr Huws, who got another 90 minutes of football under his belt on his return from injury.

Danny Rowe hit the crossbar and Ben Morris came close to making it 2, but it was level at the break as Harvey Knibbs scored from close range.

The second-half was largely the same as the first, with Town dominant, but Viktor Johansson in the away goal was in impressive form, denying both Ben Folami and McKendry in style.

There was to be a winner, though, as Woolfenden slammed home from close range after Morris' cross had been pushed to the defender, meaning Town have won their opening two Premier League Cup group matches.

Town: Gerken, Crowe, Woolfenden, Webber, Kenlock, Huws, Rowe, McLoughlin, McKendry, Morris, Folami.
