Celina magic wins it for Town
Bersant Celina’s brilliant free-kick a minute from time gave Town the points at the Pirelli Stadium.
The Kosovo international found the net with a right foot curler after winning the set-piece himself following a foul from Stephen Warnock.
Burton led just before the hour when Ben Turner thumped a header into the net but Blues were level midway through the half with Martyn Waghorn’s seventh goal of the season. Then Celina took over.
Town made one change from the team that went down to Norwich last week, with Freddie Sears in for the injured Tom Adeyemi.
Lucas Akins shrugged off Tristan Nydam to create an early opportunity for Nigel Clough’s side, then had an air shot after the loose ball broke to him on the edge of the box.
Bart Bialkowski held firm after Kyle McFadzean glanced a free-kick goalwards, then Marvin Sordell had a shot deflected wide after good link-up play inside the Town box.
McFadzean sidefooted wide from the angle as the home side, backed by a strong wind, dictated the early exchanges, Lloyd Dyer fizzing a cross onto the roof of the net, while at the other end Joe Garner almost sent Waghorn clear in Town’s first foray into home territory.
Town had an anxious look when a clearance cannoned back into Bialkowski’s grateful hands, then Adam Webster was in the right place to clear, Cole Skuse doing well to shadow the run of Luke Murphy.
Sears had too much on his cross after David McGoldrick had released him down the left, then Waghorn provided the first moment of real quality in the game with a spin away from his marker and a pass to McGoldrick, the striker bringing a save from Connor Ripley.
Bialkowski held on at the second attempt from Sordell’s strike from the edge of the box, the Town ‘keeper doing superbly seconds later to deny Dyer with his feet in a gilt edged chance.
Jake Buxton headed clear from Jordan Spence’s cross as McGoldrick threatened at the back post, then Matthew Lund fired wide after Murphy’s excellent pass.
McGoldrick, who carried Town’s main threat in the first-half, rifled a shot into the sidenetting, Sordell wayward with the final effort of the opening 45 minutes.
Webster did well to block Jamie Allen’s strike as the second-half got underway, Buxton’s cross evading all as Burton started on the front foot.
Incisive play between Waghorn and Garner released McGoldrick and it needed an excellent tackle from Stephen Warnock to deny the Republic of Ireland international.
Bialkowski showed a strong left hand to keep out Murphy’s 20 yarder but from the corner, Turner made the breakthrough with a thumping header into the roof of the net on 57 minutes.
Kevin Bru came on for his first appearance of the season, replacing Nydam with Matty Palmer on for Allen for the Brewers.
Town were level midway through the half, Garner kept the ball alive down the right with a brave header, Burton failed to clear and Waghorn buried a left footer into the bottom corner.
McFadzean couldn’t keep his shot down after a corner broke to him, Bialkowski quickly off his line to beat Dyer to the ball over the top then Waghorn showed strength and touch to get behind the Burton defence and his cross cum shot was inches away from finding the net.
Grant Ward replaced Sears, McGoldrick then cutting in from the left and smashes a shot just wide of the far post.
Former Blue, Luke Varney entered the fray for the closing stages, Sordell making way. McGoldrick replaced by Celina.
Ripley was forced to divert Waghorn’s corner over his bar then Celina took centre stage. He won the free-kick, then sent in a fantastic strike into the corner of the net from 20 yards. His celebration was something else as well, throwing his shirt into the crowd as Blues ended a run of three straight defeats.
