Young Blues edged out by Owls
Town U18s fell to a 1-0 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday at Playford Road.
Neither side was in control throughout, with the visitors’ strike just before half-time proving enough to take the spoils in a tight encounter.
Owls came flying out the traps and almost had the lead inside 10 minutes. Liam Waldock picked the ball up midway through the Town half before firing a speculative effort against the crossbar.
Blues regrouped and twice threatened to break the deadlock as Ben Knight came close with a clever free-kick and Armando Dobra saw his header well saved.
Mitchell Ware was then on hand to save Town as the ‘keeper denied Wednesday twice in quick succession with impressive stops.
But the breakthrough came three minutes before the break. The visitors broke on the counter and found winger Ben Hughes who made no mistake with a cool finish from inside the penalty area.
The second-half only really kicked into life with 15 minutes remaining. Blues’ Tyreece Simpson latched on to a long through ball but fired his half-volley well over the crossbar.
Alan Lee’s side thought they had snatched a draw in the dying stages but substitute Tommy Hughes was judged offside having pounced to fire home a rebound from Knight’s strike.
