U23 | TOWN 3 HULL 4

9 April 2018

Town edged out in thrilling encounter at Playford Road

Aaron Drinan scored a hat-trick, but it was in vein as Hull City grabbed a late winner to ensure Town's U23s took nothing from the game.

In a frenetic start to the game, the Tigers took the lead with Callum Smith racing onto a long pass before lifting the ball over Nick Hayes and into the net.

The Blues responded immediately, though, with Drinan applying the finishing touches to a lovely move after being slipped in by a superb reverse pass from Jack Lankester.

Town were then in the ascendancy with Drinan, Conor McKendry and Brett McGavin all having opportunities to score, but against the run of play, Hull re-took the lead. Another long ball forward from inside the Tigers half evaded everyone and was tapped in at the back-post by Smith for his second of the afternoon.

It was a lead which the visitors would hold until half-time, and then extend soon after the restart. Robbie McKenzie forced a corner goalwards and although it looked as if Shane McLoughlin may have cleared the ball off the line, the referee gave the goal.

With 20 minutes to play, Drinan reduced the arrears with his second of the afternoon, finishing off another slick move having been put in on goal by McLoughlin.

Two minutes later, Lankester almost made it 3-3, but was thwarted by a superb save from the Tigers 'keeper.

The leveller was coming, and it did soon after with Lankester having a major role to play. He rode a couple of challenges, doing well to stay on his feet, before finding Drinan to complete his hat-trick.

Gerard Nash's side went for the winner, but were picked off with under five minutes to play with Liam Edwards lashing into the corner from the edge of the box, securing all three points for Hull.

Town: Hayes, Crowe (Brown, 80), Clements, Marshall, Ndaba, McGavin, Blanchfield (El Mizouni), McLoughlin, McKendry (Knight, 80), Drinan, Lankester. Not used: Wright, Henderson.
