Waggy and Luke prove smash hits as Town support Elena Baltacha Foundation
Martyn Waghorn and Luke Hyam were at Sidegate Primary School today to help promote the Elena Baltacha Foundation.
The Foundation carries the name of Britain’s former number one women’s tennis player, who was also the daughter of ex-Town defender Sergei Baltacha.
Elena, who remained a Town fan long after her dad left the Club in 1990, sadly passed away in May 2014 from liver cancer but the Foundation is there to provide opportunities for children of all backgrounds to play the game she loved.
Martyn’s wife, Leoni, is a mentor for the Foundation and hosted a personal training session for the schoolchildren, ably supported by Waggy and Luke, who is a former pupil of Sidegate.
The Town duo also showed off their tennis ability under the watchful eye of Nino Severino, widower to Elena, and chairman of the Foundation. He is also a multi-sports specialist in mental and movement training and works with Town’s Academy.
The Foundation is also focused on promoting healthy lifestyle, exercise and nutrition through their educational programme.
“This is an important Foundation that means a lot to the people of Ipswich so it’s great to work with them,” said Martyn, whose son Ruben is a talented tennis player.
“What Nino and everyone else at the Foundation does is fantastic. These events put a smile on the kids’ faces which is great but at the same time Luke and I enjoyed ourselves too.
“We did some drills and had a few rallies. I think I won so I’ll be ready for my Wimbledon qualifiers next week!”
