BOSS ON CUP EXIT

6 January 2018

We were the better team until wonder goal says Mick

Mick McCarthy felt Nathan Thomas’ stunning winner for Sheffield United summed up recent fortunes for Town.

Blues went out of the FA Cup at the third round stage after the midfielder found the net with a brilliant 25 yard strike midway through the first-half.

“We started well and were the better team and then  they’ve gone ahead with a fabulous strike into the top corner,” the Town boss told iFollow Ipswich.

“That sums up the way things are going for us at the moment.

“We tried hard to get back in the game and I’m not disappointed with the performance but I am with the result.

“We didn’t work their ‘keeper enough though. We got into decent positions but the final ball let us down. They have defended well and one stunning goal was the difference.”

Luke Hyam returned to the starting line-up after an 18 month absence through injury, with Mick adding: “That is a big positive and it was great to see him back.

“It was a remarkable performance from him considering he has only been training for a week or so.”

Tommy Smith missed the game through illness, with reports that he may be on the way to Colorado Rapids in the MLS.

“Tommy was poorly yesterday and went home. I have not seen any photos of him in a first class lounge at an airport so until I do, there is nothing to say,” added Mick.
