Joe Garner got his Town career off to a flying start with the winner against Birmingham on the opening day of the season. The visitors were the stronger side before the break as Che Adams and Clayton Donaldson both went close to opening the scoring but failed to hit the target. Town took charge after the restart, though, and had a deserved lead when Garner met a neat cross from Jonas Knudsen to break the deadlock. Bartosz Bialkowski produced a string of saves to keep Harry Redknapp’s Birmingham at bay with the Polish shot-stopper denying both Marc Roberts and Emilio Nsue in fine fashion. The only dampener on an otherwise perfect start to the season for Mick McCarthy’s side was a season-ending injury to midfielder Andre Dozzell who was stretchered off in the first-half.

Previous meetings at St Andrews:
13/12/16 Birmingham 2-1 Town
23/01/16 Birmingham 3-0 Town
19/08/14 Birmingham 2-2 Town
31/08/13 Birmingham 1-1 Town
03/11/12 Birmingham 0-1 Town

One to watch: Che Adams
Adams is Birmingham’s joint-top scorer this term with seven goals and has proved an attacking threat since new boss Garry Monk took charge. The forward was on the scoresheet in his side’s win over Hull last time out and also provided an assist that evening.
