Town frozen out at wintry Ashton Gate

Milan Djuric’s header midway through the second-half gave Bristol City the points at a freezing Ashton Gate.

The substitute got on the end of a cross to leave Bart Bialkowski with no chance from close range.

Callum Connolly came closest to getting on the scoresheet for Blues in a game of few chances, the Everton loanee seeing a header saved by Frank Fielding.

Cole Skuse returned to the side after recovering from a hamstring injury to face his former club in one of four changes to the team that went down against Hull in midweek.

Bobby Reid showed a neat touch to create an opening for himself on the edge of the box, his shot comfortably saved by Bialkowski, Town responding with Freddie Sears driving into the Robins’ box before the danger was cleared.

Sears almost got on the end of Cameron Carter-Vickers’ 50 yard pass, Fielding gathering under pressure from the Town striker, then Martyn Waghorn won a free-kick 20 yards out, his strike hitting the wall.

Hordur Magnusson’s long throw caused some concern for the Town backline but Luke Chambers cleared as Famara Diedhiou tried to capitalise, then at the other end the ever-willing Sears hooked the ball back into the danger area but Bailey Wright cleared from Waghorn.

Bialkowski had to head clear after Fielding’s kick downfield had put in Jamie Paterson, Diedhiou seeing his volley deflected away from the Town goal as chances remained at a premium.

Jordan Spence headed over from Jonas Knudsen’s cross, Fielding holding firm from Connolly’s header at the back post as an even first-half came to an end.

Josh Brownhill was crowded out on the edge of the box as the second-half got underway, Lloyd Kelly seeing his follow up shot blocked, the left-back then testing Bialkowski from distance.

Djuric replaced Diedhiou in the game’s first change and he had a gilt edged chance to open the scoring on the hour after Bialkowski had parried Marlon Pack’s shot but he failed to find the net from close range.

Djuric made amends soon after though, getting in front of Adam Webster to head home from Kelly’s cross on 64 minutes.

Connolly got on the end of Spence’s cross at the back post but Bristol bundled the ball away from goal, then Grant Ward curled a free-kick over the bar as Town searched for an equaliser.

Waghorn almost scored direct from a corner, Fielding clearing off his goalline, Bersant Celina joining the fray for the final stages but despite Blues threatening to the final whistle the City goal stayed intact.
