'I feel ready for it a lot more. I know what to expect now and my time out on loan played a big part in that'
Flynn Downes says the benefit of a loan spell at Luton last season has put him in a better position to stake a first-team claim at Portman Road.
The 19-year-old midfielder spent the second half of last term on loan at Kenilworth Road and helped the Hatters to promotion from League Two.
“Going on loan last season helped me big time,” Flynn told the Club website.
“When you are playing for the U23s, there is no crowd, no real points at stake. You want to win but there is nothing on the line really. Playing first-team football, everything is on the line. It’s all about winning and it was definitely the right decision for me to go there.
“That time at Luton helped me as a young player, the different things you have to face. At home, we played teams off the park but when we played away, every game was a right scrap. It gave me experience of different styles, different ways to win football matches.
“Last season, getting involved with the first-team here at the start of the season came out of nowhere for me. A year on, I feel ready for it a lot more. I know what to expect now and my time out on loan played a big part in that.
“With the new gaffer coming in during the summer, I wasn’t sure how he saw my situation but he said he wanted me at the Club and to be involved in the first-team and that was great for me and I’m really enjoying it.
“Now it’s down to me to get in the side and try and get a run of games.”
