BOSS | FIRST-HALF COST US

10 April 2019

Quaner chance pivotal moment says Paul and praise for Downes

Paul Lambert pointed to Collin Quaner’s effort that hit the post before Brentford’s opening goal as the key moment in the game but had no arguments with the result.

Neal Maupay struck a minute after Quaner’s chance and Ollie Watkins put the Bees in the driving seat before the half hour.

“It was big turning point when Collin hit the post. He did everything right and we thought it was in,” the Town boss told iFollow Ipswich after the 2-0 defeat at Griffin Park.

“Then we had the wind taken out of our sails with two quick goals and I can have no qualms about the result. We never really turned up in the first-half.

“That was disappointing. The first 45 minutes cost us. We were slightly better in the second-half and Judgey [Alan Judge] had a chance towards the end but over the 90 minutes they were better than us.”

Paul had praise for Flynn Downes, who lost his footing in the lead up to the second goal.

“It was a mistake but that happens in football and I thought Flynn coped with that brilliantly,” added Paul.

“It takes big players to get on the ball after a mistake and play and he didn’t hide. He showed a lot of character and I was delighted with him.”
