Town bow out at semi-final stage
Town U23s were beaten 3-0 by Birmingham City in the Professional Development League Two Play-Off semi-final at Portman Road this evening.
The visitors struck twice in the opening 25 minutes to secure victory, and will face Leeds United in the final.
Birmingham were on top from the off and had the lead inside two minutes. Town shot-stopper Harry Wright did well to deny Caolan Boyd-Munce, but Corey O'Keefe headed home the rebound from close range.
Town responded well and almost levelled through Brett McGavin, but the midfielder's free-kick dropped just wide of the post.
Idris El Mizouni then saw his header from a McGavin corner well saved by Birmingham 'keeper Zach Jeacock.
Approaching the half-hour mark the visitors doubled their advantage - Adan George finding the net with a low strike from inside the Town penalty area.
Wright was called into action twice after half-time for Town. The 20-year-old acrobatically prevented Geraldo Bajrami's header from hitting the back of the net, before superbly denying O'Keefe with a low save.
The hosts pushed on with 15 minutes remaining and were just inches away from pulling one back, but Pat Webber headed over from an El Mizouni cross.
Birmingham stood resolute against Town's attacks and put the result beyond doubt in the final minute when Kyle Hurst's strike deflected over Wright and into the net.
Town: Wright, Emmanuel, Patterson, Ndaba (C), Webber (Clements 74'), McGavin, Dobra, El Mizouni, Crowe (K Brown 46'), Kasinga-Madia (Oppong 59'), Z Brown.
