Downes on the up says boss but consistency is the key

Paul Lambert has acknowledged the impact Flynn Downes has made since pre-season and has challenged the midfielder to show that level of consistency to take his game on to the next level.

The midfielder caught the eye in Town’s summer schedule and was also impressive in the opening day win at Burton on Saturday.

“I don’t want to put any pressure on him but he’s a got a real chance. He’s a good player,” Paul told iFollow.

“The challenge for him is to play like he did at Burton every week. Consistency is the key. If you can get to a level of consistency when a manager knows what he is going to get from you week in, week out that’s great.

“It’s those 8/10, 9/10, 10 out of 10 performances every week that will take you somewhere and to be fair to Flynn, he’s been playing like that since the start of pre-season.

“He’s got that bit of devilment in him and you need that but I had a word with him about the incident at Notts County when he got sent-off. He’s got to learn from that.

“He’s only young and sometimes you have to walk away from things. It can be tough but when you are a good player, you can be a target for players looking to intimidate you. He’ll learn with experience.”
