Norwood and Jackson at the double as Town find goal touch

Town moved into the promotion places with a comfortable win at the University of Bolton Stadium.

James Norwood could have found the net before he did, converting a penalty in the first-half before Blues turned up the heat on the home goal after the break.

Gwion Edwards extended the lead on 50 minutes after Norwood had been denied, then Kayden Jackson struck twice either side of the hour mark to make it four.

Norwood took his personal tally to four for the season with a fifth for Blues and only the agility of Remi Matthews in the Bolton goal prevented a sixth.

Blues had close on 30 shots at goal in a game dominated by Paul Lambert’s side, who did a professional job against a young Trotters team, who to their credit kept plugging away until the final whistle.

Alan Judge came in for his first league start of the season for Town, with skipper Luke Chambers returning to the line-up, Kane Vincent-Young given his debut after his move from Colchester.

Vincent-Young was immediately in the action, sending in a cross from the right that Flynn Downes got on the end off but Jason Lowe cleared, Vincent-Young prominent again with a tricky run into the Bolton area, his cross aimed at Norwood but Lowe again stepped in to end the danger.

Vincent-Young was providing a real outlet down the right and his cross begged to be converted but Norwood couldn’t quite get his toe on the ball, Jackson denied by Matthews as Town pressed for the opener.

The breakthrough came on 19 minutes, referee Kevin Johnson awarding a penalty for handball and Norwood smashed the spot-kick into the roof of the net.

Harry Brockbank made in-roads into Town’s area as the home fans tried to lift their side, Chambers clearing, while at the other end Judge tried to release Jackson over the top but the ball skimmed through to Matthews.

Judge sent a 25 yard free-kick just over, Callum King-Harmes had a shot deflected wide for the Trotters, then a slick pass from Downes found Norwood’s incisive run but Matthews saved with his feet.

Judge dragged his shot wide from another set-up from Vincent-Young, Matthews denying Norwood again after Edwards had forced the ball on, then Norwood hooked the ball over the bar from close range.

James Weir sent a free-kick over the bar, Vincent-Young doing superbly to cover after King-Harmes had forced his way into Town’s box as Bolton enjoyed a flurry of attacking intent before the break.

Finlay Lockett replaced Sonny Graham at the break for Bolton in the game’s first change, Norwood then denied by Yoan Zouma as he looked to extend Blues’ lead inside the first minute of the second-half.

Then it was Jackson’s turn to threaten, Matthews forcing the ball away at the near post, the ‘keeper producing an excellent save to push over Chambers’ header before Blues did add a second on 50 minutes, Norwood through one on one, Matthews was equal to the task but Edwards found the net from  the rebound.

Jackson soon made it three just before the hour, Edwards beat Matthews to the ball, his effort rolled back off the post and the striker was first to the rebound to push the ball over the line.

Jackson grabbed his second five minutes later with a slick finish before Blues made a first change with Emyr Huws on for Cole Skuse, who picked up a knock.

Jordan Boon replaced White, Anthony Georgiou on for Edwards, then Town made it five on 71 minutes with Norwood finding the bottom corner with a right foot finish.

Danny Rowe replaced Norwood for the closing stages, Matthews preventing Huws adding to the scoreline with a terrific save to his right as Lambert’s side finished as they started, on the front foot.
