BLACKBURN 2 TOWN 0

19 January 2019

Penalty sends Rovers on the way to three points

Second-half goals from Danny Graham and Joe Nuttall condemned Town to defeat at Ewood Park.

Graham converted from the penalty spot after an even first hour had seen Will Keane go close for Blues.

Substitute Nuttall had only just arrived on the pitch when he added a second on 73 minutes to seal victory for former Blue, Tony Mowbray’s side, with Teddy Bishop denied a consolation late on.

Alan Judge came in for his debut after the midweek move from Brentford in Town’s only change from the side that beat Rotherham last weekend, birthday boy, Jack Lankester, 19, dropping to the bench.

Cole Skuse made amends for losing possession deep in his own half by blocking Graham’s shot from 12 yards as Rovers threatened an early opener, Callum Elder seeing a cross cleared as Town responded at the other end.

Dean Gerken was alert to the danger as Bradley Dack tried to get behind the Town defence, Freddie Sears’ cross cleared by Darragh Lenihan, then Elliott Bennett blasted high over the bar from a great position.

Rovers started to turn up the heat on the Town goal, Dack’s 25 yard free-kick deflected wide and from the corner, Gerken was relieved to see Jack Rodwell’s flick come back off the post and into his welcome hands.

Seconds later, Dack got clear but couldn’t get enough on the ball to lift it over Gerken and into the net, James Collins clearing, Gerken holding firm again to beat out Adam Armstrong’s strike as Rovers continued to edge the threat on goal.

Collin Quaner forced a corner down the left, Will Keane unable to get on the end of a ball over the top, then the Hull loanee had much more success seconds later, rounding ‘keeper David Raya but Rovers smothered his shot behind as Town came the closest yet to a breakthrough.

Collins headed wide from a free-kick, Blues enjoying a flurry of activity around the home goal as an even first-half came to an end.

Joe Rothwell replaced Harrison Reed at the break in the first change of the game, Rovers started the second-half on the front foot, Lewis Travis having a shot blocked, Collins at full stretch to head clear inside his own box.

Rothwell couldn’t capitalise on Collins’ stray pass, Quaner flicking Elder’s cross over the bar, Town seeing out Corry Evans’ delivery as the home fans’ frustration began to grow.

The breakthrough came midway through the half, Elder judged to have pulled back Armstrong and Graham did the rest from the spot.

Blackburn were inches away from a second when Rothwell smashed a vicious left footer against the post, Lankester entering the fray for Quaner.

Raya saved from Luke Chambers’ header, Graham replaced by Nuttall in Rovers’ second change and with his first touch he extended the lead, passing the ball into the net after Bennett released Armstrong with a superb pass.

Armstrong fired wide after cutting inside, Judge then seeing his stabbed effort cleared as Town looked for a way back in the game in the closing stages.

Bishop replaced Sears in Town’s last throw of the dice and the substitute was so close to making an immediate impact, his goalbound shot hitting Lenihan after confusion in the Rovers rearguard had left the goal open.

Dack was inches away from a third in added on time as Rovers saw the game out to make in an unhappy return to Ewood Park for Paul Lambert.
