"It was rewarding to see so many young players given their chance by the manager," says Atay ahead of Youth Cup challenge
The Academy are looking to finish off a good week with victory in the FA Youth Cup against Exeter at Portman Road on Saturday.
Nine homegrown players were either in action or on the bench for Tuesday’s Leasing.com Trophy game against Colchester, with Brett McGavin making his first-team debut from the start and two 16-year-olds, Liam Gibbs and Tawanda Chirewa, handed their first senior appearance as late substitutes.
Gibbs is set to be included in the squad for the tie against Exeter, with U18 manager Adem Atay telling the Club website: “We are all looking forward to Saturday’s game.
“We obviously want to go as far as we can in the competition but the ultimate goal for our Academy is to see players develop here and eventually reach the first-team. And not just reach the first-team but stay there.
“For everyone involved in the Academy, it was rewarding to see so many young players given their chance by the manager during the week.
“The challenge for the boys now - like all our young players here - is to maintain their development and in time to become players who consistently compete at first-team level.”
Tickets are priced at £3 adults and £1 concessions and will be on sale at the turnstiles. The East of England Co-op Stand will be in use only with gates opening at 1.15pm.
