U23 | TOWN 3 CARDIFF 1

14 October 2019

Solid performance sees Blues secure back to back victories

Town U23s defeated Cardiff City 3-1 at Playford Road this afternoon.

Joy Mukena, Kai Brown and an own goal saw Gerard Nash and Chris Hogg's side to the three points in the Professional Development League Two clash.

The visitors started brightly and forced Blues 'keeper Harry Wright into action in the eighth minute. Ben Margetson tried his luck from the edge of the box but Wright did superbly to get to his left and tip the ball round the post.

The game settled down with neither side creating any chances for the next twenty minutes or so, but, on the half-hour mark trialist Mukena broke the deadlock. A Brett McGavin corner fell kindly to the centre-half in the box and he did brilliantly to dig out a shot that curled into the top corner.

And in the 36th minute the hosts doubled their advantage. A fine move from Town was capped off when Brown fired into the bottom corner following trialist Levi Andoh's low cross from the right.

It remained that way until half-time but just 90 seconds after the restart the result was put beyond doubt. Tyreece Simpson smashed a shot goalwards and it just crossed the line after appearing to hit Ryan Pryce's hand.

In the 55th minute Tommy Hughes almost netted a fourth for the home side, but his fierce effort was pushed away by Cardiff shot-stopper Matt Hall.

With just under 20 minutes remaining, the Bluebirds pulled a goal back as Shamar Moore struck a low effort past Wright.

But, having not picked up a point in their first six games of the season, Blues saw the game out comfortably to secure back to back wins.
