Drinan double as Blues cruise to victory
Aaron Drinan scored a first-half double as Town produced an impressive performance in the first of two 75-minute games away at Colchester.
The Irishman put Blues into an early lead after six minutes with a cool finish into the bottom corner. Drinan then doubled Town’s lead from the penalty spot.
Gwion Edwards made it three just after the half-hour mark as Blues took control of the game. Idris El Mizouni grabbed a fourth in spectacular fashion just after the interval.
Meanwhile, Stephen Ward was making his first start for the Club following his signing on Monday. Kane Vincent-Young was also back in the starting XI for the first time since October.
It didn’t take long for Town to get into their stride, Drinan was played through by Bishop and he calmly slotted home beyond Dean Gerken to make it 1-0 to Town after 6 minutes.
Harry Wright was then called into action at the other end on 14 minutes and made a smart stop to deny Luke Gambin from close range.
Town could’ve doubled their lead in the 20th minute as Dobra raced to the byline and cut the ball back to Vincent-Young but the full-back saw his volley well saved by Gerken.
Blues were awarded a penalty in the 23rd minute as former Town man Tommy Smith fouled Teddy Bishop just inside the penalty area. Drinan stepped up and sent Gerken the wrong way.
Town were in complete control just after 30 minutes as Gwion Edwards cut inside from the left and curled the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
Just before the break, Jevani Brown found a yard of space and got a shot away but Wright was equal to it to deny him. Town went in at half-time three goals to the good.
Idris El Mizouni replaced Emyr Huws for the final 30 minutes of action and it didn’t take the Tunisian long to make an impact with his strike from 25 yards finding the top corner on 52 minutes, leaving Gerken rooted to the spot.
