Woolfenden strike takes Town back to the top
Luke Woolfenden’s first goal for Town was enough to take Blues back to the top of the League One table.
The defender got on the end of Luke Garbutt’s free-kick just before the break to head past Josh Vickers.
Garbutt was close to adding a second on the hour while at the other end former Imp, James Wilson, cancelled out the threat from Jorge Grant as the visitors looked to snatch a point.
Paul Lambert stayed with the same team that beat Tranmere last weekend as the sides locked horns for the fourth time this season.
Blues began brightly and Will Keane was almost in at the far post from a Garbutt cross, Kayden Jackson failing to get anything on the resultant corner, Emyr Huws then testing Vickers with a right footer from the edge of the box.
The Wales international got on the end of a well-worked free-kick but Lincoln smothered the strike, Will Norris quickly off his line at the other end as the Imps broke and Grant tried to release Tyler Walker.
A quality touch from Huws set up Alan Judge in the area but his cross was cleared, Luke Chambers rattling a drive that cannoned back off Jason Shackell as Town pressed for a breakthrough, Keane then racing on to Jackson’s hold up play to fire just wide after a flowing move.
Lincoln responded with Norris tipping over Walker’s effort, the Imps threatening on the counter and Tyreece John-Jules had the opportunity to break in on goal but Wilson got back to quell the threat.
Garbutt had a 30 yard free-kick blocked, Gwion Edwards feeding the ball back into the box, with Shackell clearing but Blues got the breakthrough just before half-time, Garbutt’s free-kick met by Woolfenden at the far post and the ball sneaked past Vickers.
Judge almost added a second with the last kick of the half, the Republic of Ireland international cutting in from the left and seeing his shot deflect just wide.
Edwards did superbly to prevent Harry Anderson levelling for the visitors early in the second-half, the wing-back managing to divert the ball past the post from six yards out, Walker then having a header just wide.
Vickers produced a superb save to deflect an equally good effort from Garbutt past the post, the ‘keeper holding firm a minute later from Keane’s header before the Imps made a first change with John-Jules making way for Tom Hopper.
Lincoln changed it up again on 70 minutes with Anderson and former Town loanee Tayo Edun replaced by Conor Coventry and Zak Elbouzedi.
Wilson skimmed a header just wide, Town making a first change with Teddy Bishop on for Judge, Wilson then doing superbly to stop Grant getting in as Lincoln got free on the break.
Bishop had a shot blocked as Town looked to secure the points, James Norwood entering the fray in added on time with Blues retaining the unbeaten run in 2020 in fairly comfortable style.
