Bennetts on target as young Blues pick up three points in Essex
Town U23s picked up a comfortable 2-0 victory over Colchester United this afternoon.
Keanan Bennetts and Albie Armin were on target for the young Blues - who named a very strong line-up at the JobServe Community Stadium for the Professional Development League Two South clash.
Bennetts, Luke Woolfenden and Jack Lankester all played 45 minutes for Gerard Nash's side, with Armando Dobra completing the full 90.
Tommy Smith captained the U23s in Essex.
Town were on top from the off and threatened early on when Lankester's strike from the edge of the box bounced off the crossbar.
Blues continued to press and went close again but Liam Gibbs' effort was saved by Colchester shot-stopper Callum Coulter.
Approaching the half-hour mark Blues made the breakthrough. Tyreece Simpson cut the ball back to Bennetts who casually slotted into the bottom corner from about 10 yards out.
It remained that way until half-time, with Town looking comfortable.
Bert White was called into action twice for Town in the second half and on both occasions made smart saves to prevent the hosts pulling level.
Town had a one-goal lead until the 89th minute when Armin rose beautifully at a corner and headed in to make sure of the three points.
Town: White, Crowe, Woolfenden (Armin 45'), Ndaba, Smith (C), McGavin, Gibbs, Lankester (Cotter 45'), Dobra, Simpson, Bennetts (Z Brown 45').
