Town slip at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium

Town fell to a 2-1 defeat against Cheltenham at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium.

Matt Penney netted his first goal for the Club with a fine first-half strike in Gloucestershire, before the hosts completed a second-half comeback.

Paul Cook made three changes to the side that lost at Burton on Saturday, with central defender Cameron Burgess coming in for his Town debut, while Kyle Edwards and Macauley Bonne were also named in the starting XI.

Tom Carroll, who put pen to paper on a one-year deal at Portman Road yesterday, and Hayden Coulson, who signed earlier this month, were named on the bench.

The first clear chance of the game went the way of the hosts. A long throw-in was met at the back post by Callum Wright, but the midfielder volleyed over from close range.

Town began to apply pressure and in the ninth minute found the opener. Scott Fraser's low effort was cleared off the line and found Penney on the edge of the area, with the full-back unleashing a vicious strike that left Robins shot-stopper Owen Evans with no chance.

Just three minutes later the Blues should have extended their lead. Bonne collected a flick-on from Joe Pigott and lifted the ball over Evans, but then missed his kick from no more than a few yards out, allowing Evans to scramble back and deny the frontman.

Town took a deserved lead into half-time, with Edwards looking a constant threat throughout the first 45 minutes.

But after the restart it was Cheltenham creating the more dangerous chances and just after the hour mark Michael Duff's side equalised. A long throw was met at the back post by Wright, with Vaclav Hladky unable to get a strong enough hand and keep the header out.

Then with five minutes to go the hosts went in front. Again it was a long throw causing the Blues trouble as Cook's side failed to clear the lines before Will Boyle snuck a low effort into the bottom corner from the middle of the box.

With a minute remaining Carroll came on for his Town debut.
