Chirewa on target for young Blues in Portman Road defeat

Town U23s' opening game of the Professional Development League Two campaign ended in a narrow loss to Coventry City.

The first chance of the game went the way of the visitors as Antoni Bort came up with a smart stop to deny Matt Godden's free-kick.

Coventry took the lead on 20 minutes, Fabio Tavares lifting the ball over Bort to open the scoring.

The young Blues had a great opportunity to equalise just two minutes later after winning a penalty but Ben Morris hit his spotkick over the top of the goal.

Town had Bort to thank once again midway through the half as he turned away Josh Reid's close-range effort.

Kieron Dyer's side finished the half on top, Tawanda Chirewa and Levi Andoh shooting wide of the mark before the former stung the palms of Coventry 'keeper Joe O'Shaughnassey.

Town created two good chances to equalise early in the second period. First, Matt Ward fired over from the corner of the box after Morris had nutmegged his marker with a classy flick before Chirewa was denied by the feet of O'Shaughnassey.

Coventry could've netted at the other end a few minutes later but Bort was equal to Reid's well-struck effort.

The hosts got the reward for their dominance on 67 minutes, Chirewa curling a left-footed shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

Morris was inches away from turning the game on it's head less than 60 seconds later, his cross-cum-shot rebounding off the crossbar.

Coventry were denied by the woodwork with seven minutes remaining, Harrison Nee heading against the post before the ball rebounded off Bort and went behind. The resulting corner caused a goalmouth scramble before Town managed to clear their lines.

Another Sky Blues corner saw them retake the lead moments later, Josh Pask bundling the ball home from close range.

Albie Armin went agonisingly close to another equaliser in stoppage time but his header hit the inside of the post as Coventry claimed the three points.
