Dobra on target as young Blues draw

Tristan Nydam played 52 minutes for Town U23s as they were held to a draw by QPR in the Professional Development League.

It was his first game time in 581 days after breaking his ankle and damaging his ligaments in a pre-season game at Notts County in summer 2019.

Kayden Jackson, Jack Lankester, Jon Nolan and Armando Dobra also featured for the young Blues, the latter on target from the penalty spot at Playford Road.

The first chance of the game fell to Lankester, the wide man shooting off target after cutting in from the right flank.

QPR thought they'd taken the lead on 11 minutes as Martell Taylor-Crossdale turned and half-volleyed into the back of the net from the edge of the box, but the forward was flagged offside.

Good interplay on the right wing then led to Dylan Crowe pulling the ball back to Dobra but the attacking midfielder couldn't get enough on his shot with 10 minutes to go until the break.

Goalkeeper Harry Wright was called into action late in the half, acrobatically tipping away Faysal Bettache's powerful strike from distance as the sides went in level.

QPR had an early chance to take the lead in the second half as Taylor-Crossdale was brought down just outside the box by Elkan Baggott but George Thomas curled the set piece over the bar.

Jackson saw a low shot saved as Kieron Dyer's side looked to take the initiative at the other end.

Dobra provided the spark the game needed on 67 minutes, driving at the heart of the defence before being brought down just inside the box. The Albanian picked himself up to slam the resulting penalty straight down the middle and open the scoring.

The lead lasted just six minutes, however, as the lively Taylor-Crossdale curled a free-kick into the bottom corner from the edge of the D to level the match.

QPR subsitute Hamzad Kargbo went close to turning the game on its head three times in quick succession, being denied by Tommy Smith and Wright before his third effort was cleared off the line by Fraser Alexander.

Jackson saw penalty appeals waved away while Kargbo headed wide at the near post in the closing stages as both sides were forced to settle for a point.
