Four signings in five days for Town
Matt Penney has signed a two-year deal at Portman Road, joining the Club as a free agent.
The versatile 23-year-old will officially become a Blue on 1 July when his contract with Sheffield Wednesday ends. His deal at Town includes the option of a year’s extension.
Born in Chesterfield, Matt progressed through Wednesday's Academy and turned professional in 2015.
He made his professional debut after joining Bradford City on loan in 2017, and had a spell on loan at Mansfield the following year before heading to Germany in 2019.
Matt spent the 2019/20 season on loan with FC St. Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga, where he made 17 league appearances.
He returned to Wednesday and went on to play 32 times for the club but is now relishing the chance to line up for Town.
“After meeting the manager, I knew that this was the right place to kick on with my career,” Matt told iFollow Ipswich.
“The Club is definitely going in the right direction and I want to be part of that.
“My main aim is to help Ipswich get back to the Championship and I will give it my absolute best to try and make that happen.”
Town boss Paul Cook added: “Matt has a lot of qualities and is at an age where his whole career is in front of him.
“I can tell he has a real appetite and he should be a great addition to the squad. The size of this club won't faze him and he can grow here.”
Matt makes it four signings in five days for Town following the arrivals of Rekeem Harper, Macauley Bonne and Vaclav Hladky as the new look squad for 2021/22 begins to take shape.
Season tickets are on sale for next term at the best prices in what will be the first year under the new Gamechanger 20 ownership. Click here for full details.
