Boss on narrow semi-final defeat and superb Youth Cup run

Adem Atay said the group gave it everything but admitted the better team won as his Town side bowed out of the FA Youth Cup at the semi-final stage following defeat to Liverpool.

Edwin Agbaje headed the young Blues in front at the end of the first half, but two second-half strikes from the Reds saw them prevail at Portman Road.

"The lads gave it everything and this is all part of the learning curve," the Town U18s manager said.

"We need to bounce back from this quickly because elite performers, which is what those lads are aiming to be, have to bounce back and focus on the next challenge.

"Everyone at the Club is so proud of those lads, though. We're the only team from the first round to make it this far, and the only EFL team to make it this far - it's been some journey.

"I spoke to Alex Inglethorpe [Liverpool academy manager] before the game and he said 'we were worried about you' which really is a compliment.

"On the night we are gutted and everyone is feeling low, but we have to be gracious in defeat and get ready for the next one. We have a semi-final to prepare for in the league programme and must be ready.

"Liverpool were better this evening and deserved to progress, but I'm proud of that group and they should be very proud of themselves."
